Clement Uhl started Toledo Metal Furniture company in 1903 with his brothers Philip and Joe. Their first customer was the Hoffman Ice cream and candy store in Toledo. Clement, who had no formal education, was a gifted artist and inventor. He and his brother Joe had numerous furniture patents related to steel furniture design and construction.

Clement was born on January 26, 1878 at home, in New Washington, Ohio, to Bernard Benedict Uhl and Elisabeth Meibers. Clement, had 9 brothers and died in July 1964 in Toledo, Ohio,  at the age of 86.

Clement married Clara Marie Terveer in  July 1911. They had eight children together:  Jean, Constance, Margaret, Bernard, Richard, Philip, Elizabeth,  and Patricia. The family lived in the old West End area of Toledo and had a summer cottage on Lake Erie at Luna Pier Michigan..
